Know the Required Dimensions for Game Tables Before Remodeling for a Recreation Room

Know the Required Dimensions for Game Tables Before Remodeling for a Recreation Room
You work hard during the week and deserve to have a dedicated space within your home to unwind. Or maybe you have teenage children and want to give them their own entertaining area that is separate from the main living space of the home. In both of these scenarios, remodeling to add a recreation room would serve these needs.
Recreation rooms have greatly evolved over the past twenty years, especially in the high-end home market. Homeowners expect this space to comfortably fit their favorite game tables as well as provide ample space for entertaining.

Since some of these game tables require quite a bit of square footage, we wanted to share some key measurements needed to accommodate different types of game tables in your recreation room:

Pool Table
Pool tables come in several different sizes, but the most common sizes are 9-, 8-, and 7-foot tables. Outlined below are the actual dimensions for these tables:

  • 9-foot table: 5 foot, 2 inches wide and 9 foot, 4 inches long
  • 8-foot table: 4 foot, 8 inches wide and 8 foot, 4 inches long
  • 7-foot table: 4 foot, 2 inches wide and 7 foot, 4 inches long

As a rule of thumb, you'll want to leave at least 30 inches from the top of the table to the hanging light fixture above. You'll also need a clear area of at least 5 feet surrounding the table. All in all, a pool table requires approximately 300 square feet of space.

Ping Pong Table
The standard ping pong table (also known as table tennis) is 5 foot, 0 inches wide, 9 foot, 7 inches wide, and 30 inches tall. It's recommended that you have at least 7 feet of clear space at each end of the table and 4 feet on each side to appropriately accommodate a ping pong table. Similar to a pool table, a ping pong table will require approximately 300 square feet of space.

Foosball Table
A foosball table will require considerably less space than a pool table or a ping pong table. The dimensions of a foosball table can range from 54 to 60 inches long and 30 to 36 inches wide. The protruding handles on a foosball table will typically need about 8 inches of clear space on each side. Plan on reserving 4 feet of clear space at the ends of the foosball table to accommodate players.

Table Shuffleboard
While there are a number of sizes available for the table version of shuffleboard, the most common size is a 22 foot-long table that is 36 inches wide. Since the players stand at the ends of the table, it can be placed up against a wall, which helps to reserve square footage in the recreation room for other needs.

While your remodeling project may not yield a recreation room that is able to accommodate all of these game tables, it's helpful to have an understanding of the required dimensions for each of these tables as you plan your dream recreation room.
