Many of our custom home building clients want to know whether installing a pool or upgrading a bathroom is the smarter investment, and the best answer really depends on your lifestyle needs. However, when you're living in Central Florida, having a pool is a desirable feature for future homeowners, and it will enhance your enjoyment of your home while living there, too.
1. Determine a budget.
Before beginning the custom home building process, you should have a clear budget in mind. The same could be said for installing a pool. Take into consideration all of the costs associated with installing the pool in addition to other necessities such as a patio and/or deck, a fence, landscaping, and monthly maintenance.
2. Consider your space.
If you have not already done so, you'll want to have your property surveyed to determine the exact locations of your property lines. This information will help you to best determine the most appropriate size for your pool and any other design features that are desired.
3. Decide on the type of pool that you want.
There are 3 basic types of in-ground pools that you will want to consider: vinyl, concrete, and fiberglass. The most durable of the 3 options is concrete; however, it's also the most expensive and takes longer to install. Specializing in building luxury custom homes, we see a number of homeowners opting for gunite pools, which use a rebar framework that is topped with a concrete and sand mixture. Gunite pools are incredibly popular and desirable based on their durability and option to be customized to a tee.
4. Consider design features.
Specifically relating to the pool itself, you should consider its shape and style. Some potential options could include a traditional rectangular-shaped pool, a freeform pool, or a lap pool. In addition, you may decide that you want a pool with a natural landscape and waterfall or a pool with an infinity edge. The possibilities are endless, really.
Something else to consider is the decking that immediately surrounds your pool. Natural stone decking such as travertine, flagstone, slate, or limestone are popular decking material choices for luxury homes.
