Formal Dining Room vs. Open Concept Living

Formal Dining Room vs. Open Concept Living
If you watch any home design television shows these days you know that the trend is to take out all the walls in the main living area to create an open concept kitchen-living-dining room. This trend has many merits. One of which being that it opens up homes that can feel cramped by lots of walls and small rooms. But is it the right style for your home?
If you’re unsure whether or not to take down walls and create an open concept home design, start by asking yourself these questions:

Where do you eat?
If you and your family tend to eat your dinners in front of the television, having a formal dining room might be an unnecessary addition. But if you sit down and eat dinner together every night, a dedicated dining room may be just the space you need for your evening meals. A formal dining room can also provide extra space by doubling as a homework space or the perfect place to host family game nights.

How do you party?
Do you love hosting parties at your home? If so, consider what kind of party you like to throw. Do you find yourself frequently hosting seated dinner parties? If so, a formal dining room is a must-have. But, if you prefer a party where guests mix and mingle with one another while snacking on hors-d'oeuvres and cocktails, an open concept home design may make more sense for you. Your large open space can accommodate more people and encourages guests to get up out of their seats and meet new people.

What’s your personal style?
There is no denying the fact that a formal dining room is, well, formal. So it’s important to consider what your personal style is and whether or not a formal dining room will suit your lifestyle. If your current home design leans toward the formal with lots of ornate antique furniture and rich fabrics, then you probably have the perfect home for a formal dining room. If, on the other hand, your home is more casual and kid-friendly, an open concept home is a great place to host movie nights and sleepovers all while keeping a watchful eye on the family.

These days it seems like everyone you know is knocking down walls to make room for a big, open concept living space. It’s a popular home design feature and it’s great for young families and people who host big parties. But, it may not be right for you. So before you bring out your sledgehammer, consider how you use your home and what type of design makes the most sense for your family.
