While it's hard to believe, the year is quickly coming to a close. Many of us are already thinking of 2016 and what the new year will bring.
For those of us in the custom homes industry, we're taking a close look at design trends for the coming year. Here are 5 custom home design trends that we can expect to see in 2016:
Design for this coming year will continue to take a fresh, clean approach, especially in the kitchen. While the popularity of white kitchens have come and gone throughout the years, you can expect that that the white kitchen is very much "in" for 2016, and this time the trend is to pair white cabinets with white back splashes.
Today's homeowners want a floor plan that is clean, bright, and open, which is why the white on white kitchen is so appealing. Using this white palette can really make the kitchen--the entertaining hub of the home--feel much more spacious.
2. Double Islands
Sometimes one island in the kitchen is just not enough. Having double islands in the kitchen--one for food prep and a second for additional seating--is all the rage for 2016. So much entertaining is done in the kitchen, and having this extra counter space/seating encourages people to congregate to the kitchen.
3. Seamless Indoor/Outdoor Living
This trend has been popular in Central Florida custom homes for quite some time now, and it's certainly not going anywhere. With this type of home design, the indoor and outdoor entertaining areas flow seamlessly together. For instance, a dining area may open up to an outdoor patio with a fireplace. This design trend contributes towards the open floor plan that homeowners want in 2016.
4. Brass Fixtures
While it doesn't seem like too long ago that people were quick to get rid of the 1980s brass fixtures, they will most certainly be a returning trend in 2016. We can expect to see brass being used as one of the major finishes for lighting fixtures and hardware. One change, however, will be that these brass fixtures have a more worn look to them (think 1880s versus 1980s).
5. Use of Sustainable Materials
Going green seems to always be in, and this will definitely continue in 2016. Consider partnering with a custom homes builder that experienced in green friendly design. Find a way to incorporate sustainable or reclaimed building materials into your new home. Examples could include the use of bamboo or cork flooring throughout the home, countertops made of recycled glass, and the use of salvaged wood to create unique architectural points of interest within the home.
